Garlic and Lemon Juice: A Recipe for Reducing Cholesterol?

Research has found garlic and lemon juice to have health benefits when taken separately. However, a new study concluded that they may be even more healthful when taken together because they significantly reduced total cholesterol and blood pressure. Additionally, some natural health experts believe the combination has considerable rejuvenation properties.

The study published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine suggests that taking 20 grams of fresh garlic and one tablespoon of lemon juice per day is a good formula for improving cardiovascular health. It resulted in more reductions of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and fibrinogen than garlic alone, lemon juice alone or a control group. These effects can help prevent a cardiovascular event, as high total cholesterol and LDL are linked to hardening of the arteries, while high fibrinogen is tied to an increased risk of blood clots.

Moreover, the garlic and lemon combination as well as the garlic alone significantly lowered blood pressure. The effect of garlic on blood pressure came as no surprise because a recent review of seven randomized controlled trials determined that garlic supplements could lower systolic pressure by 6.71 mmHg and diastolic pressure by 4.79 mmHg.

The Test

In the clinical trial at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in Iran, scientists recruited 112 people with elevated blood lipids. Participants were separated into four groups: The first group received both garlic and lemon; the second received 20 grams of fresh garlic; the third received 1 tablespoon of lemon juice; and the fourth was the control group. Testing after eight weeks of intervention revealed the benefits.

“A combination of garlic and lemon juice resulted in an improvement in lipid levels and blood pressure of people with hyperlipidemia,” wrote the researchers. “Further studies to determine the appropriate doses of garlic and lemon juice for these patients are warranted. In addition, the effect of a combination of garlic and lemon juice might be different based on the degree of hyperlipidemia.”

Garlic and Lemon Juice Cure

Although the scientific research community conducted the above study, the natural health community offers anecdotal evidence of the curative power of fresh garlic and lemon. This combination is advocated as a method of cleansing the arteries and reducing cholesterol along with boosting immunity, preventing cancer and promoting cell rejuvenation. Live in the Now has no way of verifying the claims, but they are most interesting.

One source recommended taking the dynamic duo of fresh garlic and lemon every day for forty days and repeating the process each year. It cautions that the cleansing cure may produce detoxification reactions, such as headaches or increased mucous, within the first few days. Other than this initial unpleasantness, the treatment is free of side effects. You have nothing to lose and much to gain.
