Wine Compounds Protect Against Heart Disease and Cancer

A review of the scientific literature has found that resveratrol, as well as other antioxidant compounds found in red wine, may halt heart disease and cancer. According to the report published in Nutrition Research, extracts made from grape seed and red wine, most notably reservatrol, possess a diverse array of actions that may prevent diseases related to inflammation, such as cardiovascular disease and even cancer. Specifically, these polyphenolic extracts were found to have gene-mutating effects that inhibit both the uptake of cholesterol by cells and a specific inflammatory process known as 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX).

Researchers found that the antioxidant-rich extracts inhibited cholesterol uptake by cells by up to 66%. In addition, the extracts dependently inhibited the proliferation of colon cancer cells while increasing cell death and inhibiting inflammatory 5-LOX activity. (Nutrition Research. 28(11): 729-737, Nov 2008. doi:10.1016/j.nutres.2008.09.001.)

The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: This research builds on the scientific evidence that the effects of , along with those of other antioxidant compounds found in red wine, may prevent the development of chronic degenerative diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

If you haven’t given resveratrol a try, we highly recommend that you do! It has been singled out time and time again by studies attempting to determine the reason that red wine seems to convey so many health benefits.
