U.S. Invests $250 Million in Your Healthy Lifestyle
Prevention. Now there’s a novel concept when it comes to health. Do you think the American populace will get on board? The government hopes so.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has earmarked $250 million to thwart chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes. Seven out of 10 American deaths each year can be linked back to these conditions. What’s more: these preventable chronic ailments account for 75% of the nation’s health spending. It seems that the fiscally responsible thing to do is stop these diseases before they manifest. But, will it work?
This investment in preventive health care is meant to tackle some of the underlying causes of chronic disease, such as smoking, alcohol abuse, poor nutrition and sedentary behaviors. The money will be channeled into initiatives on a federal, state and community level to help prevent obesity and improve fitness. It will also be used to support the existing public health infrastructure, to develop research and tracking and to expand public health training initiatives. Sounds great.
The question lies in the behavior of Americans. Can we, or more importantly, will we change our poor diets and low-activity ways? Studies have shown that in areas where nutritional information appears on restaurant menus patrons tend to order healthier meals. This is only one part of the health puzzle. It’s good that our government is willing to invest in our wellness, but are we willing to take the action necessary to make these programs work?
