Toasting Your Health?
Red wine continues to come out on top as the healthiest pick among alcoholic beverages.
In the latest study, only about 3% of people who drank more than three glasses of red wine a week had abnormal cell growth in their colons, compared to 9% of people who drank white wine. That’s a significant reduction, and it may be due to a compound in red wine and grape juice called resveratrol. Resveratrol has been found to help colon cells mature normally and lose the ability to divide. (Anderson, JC et al. Amer Jo Gastroentero 2006; 101(9):S209.)
The resveratrol content in red wines varies widely. So far, Bordeaux and muscadine wines seem to have the most. How much resveratrol wine contains depends on how long the juice stays in contact with the grape skins during processing.
If you don’t drink wine, you can get decent amounts of resveratrol in grape juice. Look for unfiltered concord or muscadine grape juice.
