Soy Isoflavones Help Prevent Bone Loss
Supplementing with 120 mg of soy isoflavones, 400 mg of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D may reduce the rate of bone loss, reports a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Researcher recruited more than 400 postmenopausal women between 40 and 60 years old and randomly assigned them to either supplement with soy isoflavones (80 or 120 mg) or a placebo for two years. All women were given calcium and vitamin D. They found that women who took 120 mg of soy isoflavones, in addition to the calcium and vitamin D, experienced statistically significant reductions in rate of bone loss.
The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: Researchers concluded that there is a possibility that a lifetime of taking soy may see a significant protective association on bone mass conservation.
