Social Interaction Helps Men Stay Sharp

You know all those TV commercials that show guys hanging out together, having fun fishing, biking and goofing off (and running to the bathroom) Well, those men may be having bladder problems, but their social life is putting them ahead of the loners when it comes to keeping dementia at bay.

A study of 147 male twins followed the men for 28 years and found that those with the most social interaction, including home and family activities, visiting friends and relatives, club activities like attending parties, card games and having home hobbies reduced their risk of developing dementia first by 26%.

In animal studies, enriched environments have been seen to actually foster new brain cell creation and brain repair processes.

This study adds to the body of research that suggests that low social and cognitive activity in mid and late life puts you at risk for developing Alzheimer’s sooner and is a call to action for men (and women) facing a third of their life in retirement mode.

The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: These finding don’t mean that all solitary types will develop dementia, but there is growing evidence that staying connected, engaged and at least mentally and physically active not only enhances your overall quality of life and wellness, but protects and enhances your brain’s health. So guys, you can consider your weekly poker game a necessary health ritual from now on. (Just try to hang on to your money!)
