Relief for Fibromyalgia, The Mystery Disease
Fibromyalgia is something of a “mystery disease.” People with this problem complain of widespread pain and fatigue, and have multiple tender points. But tests for inflammation, viral infections, thyroid disorder –or any other problem—will come back negative, and the cause remains unclear. It’s usually treated with analgesics such as acetaminophen, antidepressants, and lifestyle changes.
A new study from Italian researchers suggests that acetyl-L-carnitine may be helpful for fibromyalgia. The study used both oral and injected acetyl-L-carnitine for two weeks, then three capsules a day of 500 milligrams of acetyl-L-carnitine for another eight weeks. Compared to a placebo group, the people receiving acetyl-L-carnitine showed a significant reduction in overall pain and tender points, and an improvement in mood.
Acetyl L-carnitine plays an important role in energy production in the body. It helps to move fatty acids into a cell’s energy-producing mitochondria. It also helps to form acetyl-CoA, an important intermediary in the generation of energy from protein, fat and carbohydrates. The acetyl part of the compound is also used to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which has many roles in the body, including muscle and brain function.
These researchers conclude: “… results indicate that acetyl-L-carnitine may be of benefit in patients with fibromyalgia, providing improvement in pain as well as the general and mental health of these patients.” (Rossini, M, et al. Clin Exp Rheumatol, 2007; 25(2): 182-8.)
Acetyl-L-carnitine also appears to help age-related cognitive decline, age-related testosterone deficiency, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetic neuropathy. In studies, amounts of 1,500 to 4,000 milligrams a day have been used. See your doctor before taking acetyl-l-carnitine if you have seizure disorder, hypothyroidism or are taking an anti-clotting drug such as coumadin. Acetyl-L-carnitine can be over stimulating for some people in doses above 500 milligrams.
If you think you may have this “mystery” disease, see your doctor for a thorough work-up and proper diagnosis. There are many possible causes for aches, pains and fatigue. If your family doctor isn’t much help, a rheumatologist (who specializes in inflammatory conditions) may be your next best step.
