Protect Your Eyes from Your Computer

Computer use can lead to eyestrain, thanks to long periods of exposure to display light. Luckily, lutein may help derail the detrimental effects of computer use, according to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition. Lutein is an antioxidant carotenoid which occurs naturally in high concentrations in green leafy vegetables and egg yolks.

37 participants who used computers for long periods of time were randomly assigned into one of three groups: control (placebo), 6 mg of lutein daily or 12 mg of lutein daily. Researchers reported that those in the lutein groups experienced increased blood levels of the antioxidant as well as improvements in contrast sensitivity measurements. Those taking the 12 mg of lutein saw the most improvement.

The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: In addition to this study, which shows that lutein can help reduce eyestrain, numerous scientific studies have linked high lutein intake to reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration. Get at least 6 mg of lutein daily to protect your eyes from the glare of your computer screen. A multivitamin or other supplement containing lutein, along with other nutrients to support ocular health, can help minimize eyestrain and provide good insurance for your vision as you age.
