Something You Use Every Day May Be Weakening Your Bones

cookware Non-stick skillets are a great convenience, but they may be increasing your risk of osteoporosis. A study at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine in Ohio found that women with higher blood levels of the chemicals used to make the cookware had lower bone densities.

These chemicals are called perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and include perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA). Aside from being in cookware, they are in microwave popcorn bags, waterproof clothing, furniture, fast food packaging and stain-resistant carpeting. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) categorized perfluorinated compounds as a likely carcinogen, so some of them are being phased out of use.

However, scientists are concerned that closely related chemicals carry similar risks. One warning sign comes from a recent Danish study examining the health effects of PFAS, including the newer versions that are replacing the older ones. It discovered that women with higher blood levels of the chemical had a 16-fold greater risk of miscarriages.

Other Health Problems Associated with Non-stick Cookware

Many health conscious people like non-stick pans because they require less oil and fat in cooking; therefore, it’s ironic that the cookware threatens wellness in many ways. In addition to accumulating in the bones and causing them to become brittle, fluoride chemicals can cause hypothyroidism, cognitive problems, birth defects, immune system disorders and impaired child development. They also increase the risk of pancreatic, mammary gland, testicular and liver tumors. Fluoride is actually a poison and is the primary component of some rat exterminating products.

Fumes from PFOA Kill Birds

In the past, birds have been used as a warning system in mines because exposure to even small amounts of poison gas kills them. When a bird breathes in the PFOA fumes from a heated non-stick skillet, its lungs ulcerate, causing it to suffocate. Any agent that kills birds can’t be healthful for humans.

Danger from “Overheated” Pans is Understated

The industry admits adverse health effects can result when non-stick pans are “overheated.” They define overheated temperature as 500° F, which can be reached on a medium setting on some stoves. Furthermore, some pans emit the gases at much lower heat. Teflon has been shown to give off fumes at temperatures below 400° F.

Safe Alternative to Non-stick Cookware

You can’t go wrong with cast iron cookware. Look for a brand that is made in the USA because of concerns that those made in China may be tainted with lead or other chemicals. Seasoning it will impart non-stick properties, but if you are unsure how to do this properly, you can purchase the preseasoned variety.
