Mind Body Soul With the New Year already upon us, what better way to start and continue the year and your life with some New Year’s resolutions? I’m not talking about losing weight; I’m talking about gaining life! As far as we know, we have only one life to live.

People throughout the world are in a time of revelation, which can be seen by the protests, economic downturn and government upheaval occurring around the world. Yes, these times are hard for many. Many of us are used to living a certain lifestyle, and as a result of these difficult times, we’ve had to change our lifestyle in order to adapt and make it through.

There are many who believe that after we get through these times, things will go back to the way they were. Then again, things may not – and maybe they shouldn’t. From the protests and other demonstrations taking place, it’s evident that our way of life is not sustainable and apparently didn’t work.

So, to help you get through this chapter in your life, consider implementing some, if not all, of these resolutions:

1. Allow yourself a new beginning.

Consider this New Year a new beginning. You’ve likely had to shift your life around to adjust to the changes happening around and to you. Instead of wishing and waiting for your life to be like it was prior to these changes, see your life anew, with fresh eyes. Find joy in what you do have: Life, family, friends, pets…whatever brings a smile to your face and makes it worth getting through each day.

2. Become your own (and family’s) personal chef.

You may find that eating out is rarely an option now. Taking pleasure in creating and cooking your own meals is an excellent way around this. If you don’t know how to cook, there are a myriad of recipes available online. You can also borrow cookbooks from the library or purchase them. Cooking at home offers you the opportunity to host potlucks where you can get together with friends and family in the comfort of your home.

3. Adopt a healthier lifestyle.

This not only includes eating a primarily whole foods diet, but also finding effective ways to deal with stress, getting enough sleep and getting or remaining fit.

  • A whole foods diet includes fresh produce, fruit, whole grains, seafood, poultry and meat from grass-fed, antibiotic and hormone-free animals. If you are able to purchase organic or locally grown food, that’s even better. If not, take a look at the Environmental Working Group’s “Clean 15” list. It includes the produce items that can be purchased without being organic because they are the least likely to contain pesticide residues.
  • Finding effective ways to deal with stress can be as simple as exercising (either alone or with a friend), meditating or even expressing your stress to a friend instead of bottling it inside. Your friend can help you find a way through it.
  • Sleep is equally as important. Consider creating a sleep regimen. About 45 minutes before going to sleep, drink some chamomile tea, spray lavender mist onto your pillow (or place a lavender sachet underneath your pillow), read a book or write in a journal. The key is to build a routine so your body learns that sleep is eminent.
  • Exercise or remaining fit completes the set. If you are not regularly exercising your body, whether it is via walking, aerobics, jogging, yoga, pilates or some other workout, you may find that despite everything you do, you are not able to sleep, manage stress or digest your food well. If you can join a gym, that’s wonderful. If that is beyond your means, a variety of exercise DVDs are available. You can also find a friend or family member and go for regular walks or jogs with them.

4. Get involved.

Get involved with community projects. There are many out there, such as reading to kids, soup kitchens, shelters, you name it. There are always people who would like the extra assistance you can provide.

5. De-clutter your home.

No matter how small or large your home , there are always a few things that can be gotten rid of. Consider spending a few weeks going through your home and creating piles of the following: stuff you want to keep, stuff you want to donate and stuff you want to throw away. When putting aside stuff you want to donate, make sure to keep a list. You can get a tax write-off.

6. Enjoy your life.

I mentioned this before, but want to make sure you understand how important this is. As I previously mentioned, for all we know, this is the only life we have. The best we can do is to enjoy it! Remember, this is a new beginning, and despite how difficult you may feel your life is right now, it will pass. Your life will get better. In fact, if you take a moment and reflect on all the beauty and love that is in your life right now, you may realize you already have everything you need that is of true importance.
