Lose Those Last Few Pounds with CLA!
In a recent study performed at Ohio State University, CLA, the short-handed way of saying conjugated linoleic acid, reduced the weight in post-menopausal women with type 2 diabetes.
Following 16 weeks of supplementation with 6.4 grams of CLA daily, subject experience a reduction in their BMI by about half a point, total body fat by 3.2%, and fat tissue weight by about 3 pounds, according to findings of the 36-week randomized, double-blind, crossover study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Researchers recruited 55 obese, postmenopausal women who have diabetes and assigned them to receive either safflower oil or CLA for 16 weeks, followed by a four-week washout period where both groups didn’t take either one, and then the groups switched supplements for the next 16-week supplementation period. What they found is that CLA supplementation reduced body weight, BMI and total fat mass without altering lean muscle mass. No changes to markers of inflammation and insulin resistance were observed, they added.
The big “ah-ha” of this research was that the CLA-induced weight loss came from a reduction in fat tissue, not muscle tissue. This is important because postmenopausal women are at risk for losing muscle mass as they age.
The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: Whether you are just starting out on a weight loss journey, or only have a few stubborn pounds left to lose, CLA can help you reach your goal, without sacrificing muscle mass while you do it.
