Ladies: This Food May Eliminate Your Next Urinary Tract Infection

by

garlic Sometimes science discovers evidence that proves home remedies are indeed effective for treating illness. Such is the case with garlic, which a study finds can successfully eradicate many urinary tract infections (UTI) that are resistant to treatment with antibiotics.

Approximately 150 million people around the globe are diagnosed with UTI each year — and that doesnt include the sufferers who never see the doctor about them. Symptoms include painful urination along with increased urinary frequency and urgency. The infections usually occur in the bladder and urethra, but if they spread to the kidneys, they can have serious complications.

Researchers Look for an Alternative to Antibiotics for UTI

Rampant use of antibiotics has caused many strains of microbes to mutate, or change forms, in a way that makes them unsusceptible to the drugs’ effects. Consequently, our modern world is plagued by growing resistance to antibiotics by bacteria that cause UTI, as well as bacteria that cause a host of other infections. These resistant strains, called superbugs, are a major menace to public health.

Because of the magnitude of the problem of bacterial resistance, researchers in India wanted to examine the capacity of natural plant extracts to provide alternative treatment for UTI. They assert that the need to find agents effective against resistant microbes is urgent.

The authors chose garlic because it has been used for centuries in various parts of the world for medicinal purposes. It is known for its antimicrobial properties that can fight bacterial, fungal, protozoal and viral infections. Scientists believe allicin and other sulfur compounds in garlic are the components responsible for these actions.

Garlic Effective Against 82% of Resistant UTI

In the study published in the Pertanika Journal of Tropical Agricultural Science, scientists found “even crude extracts of [garlic] showed good activity against multidrug resistant strains where antibiotic therapy had limited or no effect.” After isolating 166 strains of bacteria from the urine of people with UTI, 56 percent of the microbes proved to be highly resistant to antibiotics. However, 82 percent of the resistant strains succumbed to the garlic.

“Ours is the first study to report the antibacterial activity of aqueous garlic extract against multidrug resistant bacterial isolates from infected urine samples leading to UTI,” said the researchers. They concluded that garlic holds promise for treatment of UTI and other infections.

How to Take Garlic

Natural health proponent Dr. Joseph Mercola says optimal benefits come from consuming fresh garlic rather than the jarred variety. He recommends crushing or chopping a fresh clove immediately before eating it. If you find it unpalatable to take in this manner, add it to honey or salad ingredients. Another method of consumption is to juice garlic in a blender with other vegetables.
