Think stress does little more than throw a wrench in your day? Think again. Stress hormones create a domino effect of unhealthy bodily responses. And while there is such a thing as positive stress versus negative stress, the net effect on your body is the same: it has a negative physiological impact.
The stress hormone norepinephrine, for example, inhibits the release and use of insulin in the body, temporarily spiking blood sugar and forcing the body to find a means of compensation. Another stress hormone, cortisol, negatively impacts the immune system and suppresses the digestive system. In fact, according to the Mayo Clinic, “[t]he long-term activation of the stress-response system — and the subsequent overexposure to cortisol and other stress hormones — can disrupt almost all your body’s processes.”
