Heart Health Benefits of Fish Oil Confirmed by New Research
When it comes to keeping your heart healthy, look to the fishes! Specifically, to fish oil. Two recent studies add to the growing body of scientific evidence that proves the cardioprotective benefits of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil.
The first study found that supplements containing the omega-3 fatty acid, DHA, reduced levels of compounds associated with inflammation by up to 20% in men with elevated triglycerides. This study, conducted by the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service, had participants take high doses of DHA (3 grams) daily for 90 days. This may be the first study to show that DHA may have anti-inflammatory effects in men with hypertriglyceridaemia, a condition which has been linked to hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
The second study is out of Columbia University Medical Center. It has found that a diet rich in fish oils can prevent the accumulation of fat in the aorta, the main artery leaving the heart. What’s more: Fish oil’s beneficial mechanism for blocking cholesterol buildup in arteries may still work even when fat and cholesterol intake is high.
The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: Besides these two studies touting the heart health benefits of fish oil, research has shown that fish oil can improve brain function, ward off depression and lessen systemic inflammation. So if you aren’t supplementing with fish oil yet, it’s a good time to start.
