Can This Antioxidant Really Activate Your “Youth Gene”?
I’m not typically one for diets, but when I read about a specific diet that is fascinating scientists with its ability to “re-capture youth” and offer significantly more health perks than just weight loss, I just had to learn more.
Hundreds of studies have indicated that practicing this diet for several years can help fight a host of potential causes of inflammation, help maintain a healthy protein turnover rate — a process critical to slowing the aging process — and it even activates an incredibly powerful anti-aging gene.[1-4]
The diet is known as “calorie restriction,” and requires that caloric intake be reduced by up to 65 percent while maintaining optimal levels of the vitamins and minerals the body needs to thrive.
Now I know what you are thinking: a 65% calorie reduction seems like an impossible (and not very appealing) quest. However, I urge you to keep reading to learn the secret about how achieving these results can be much easier than you would think.
Meet Canto and Owen
The potential benefits of this lifestyle practice piqued a tremendous amount of interest when scientists discovered that a calorie restricted diet could add years to your life by “tricking” your body into a survival mode of sorts. And it’s the results of one study in particular that are turning the heads of scientists worldwide.
Meet Canto, the rhesus monkey on the left in the picture above. Canto is 27 years old, and from a young age, he consumed a restrictive diet of 30 percent fewer calories than Owen, his 29-year-old study mate on the right.
Biologically, both monkeys are considered senior citizens. However, as you can see from the picture, after nearly 20 years on a restrictive diet, Canto appears to be more youthful, vibrant and aware. Conversely, Owen appears older, tired and apathetic.
Researchers that conducted the study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health noted that their research further confirms that “a nutritious but reduced-calorie diet blunts aging and delays the onset of several aged-related disorders.”
But, let’s be realists. Clearly, committing such devotion to life-long deprivation would be nearly impossible for most human beings to maintain. This then begged a bigger question: Could there be a nutrient that mimics the youth preserving results of a calorie-restricted diet?
The research is indicating YES.
How Resveratrol Activates the SIRT1 “Youth Gene”
You’ve no doubt heard about the amazing health benefits of resveratrol, the antioxidant thought to be the secret behind red wine’s health benefits.
Resveratrol has gained a strong reputation for its health potential based on the results of several studies in cells, animals and humans over the last several years. In fact, resveratrol has been singled out as a possible explanation for the “French paradox,” the observation that the French have generally good heart health, despite consuming a diet rich in saturated fats. But these days, researchers are discovering resveratrol may be able to do a lot more than that. Scientists are excited about preliminary research showing that resveratrol can mimic the effects of calorie restriction by activating a powerful anti-aging gene known as SIRT1 that is associated with slowing the aging process.
In a breakthrough study, Dr. David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School found that resveratrol could be capable of mimicking the effects of caloric restriction by increasing the activity of Sir2, a gene in the same family as the SIRT1 “youth gene,” in a type of yeast, extending its lifespan by up to 70 percent!
Dr. Sinclair was convinced that resveratrol’s ability to mimic the effects of caloric restriction didn’t end there. He continued to conduct extensive research aimed at understanding how resveratrol might be able to activate SIRT1 in humans. The results of a groundbreaking animal study he conducted in 2013 strongly suggested that high doses of resveratrol may directly affect the activity of SIRT1, leading to improved health and extended lifespan.
In other words, using resveratrol in conjunction with a healthy diet could mimic the effects of calorie restriction!
The Secret Behind Resveratrol’s Anti-Aging Benefits
Resveratrol’s polyphenol concentration makes it an incredibly powerful and efficient antioxidant in the body. If you’ve ever made a fruit salad, then you likely know the chef’s trick of sprinkling a little lemon juice over the fruit to keep it from turning brown due to oxidation. In many ways, antioxidants are like that lemon juice. By consistently “sprinkling” your body with antioxidants, you can prevent your body from “browning” from oxidation caused by free radicals.
But this is just the beginning. In addition to effectively mimicking the benefits of calorie restriction, resveratrol has been shown to enhance the activity of mitochondria, the energy producing “power plants” in your cells.

Resveratrol by Any Name Is NOT the Same
Before you jump onto the resveratrol bandwagon, there are few things to consider.
With all this incredible research backing up the amazing benefits of resveratrol, there seems to be no shortage of “here today, gone tomorrow” companies trying to make a quick profit on people seeking to benefit from resveratrol.
Many of these products contain trace amounts of resveratrol, while others contain resveratrol extracted from an unreliable plant form, such as raspberries. Or maybe it is sourced well and has decent amounts, but its percentage of resveratrol concentration is a weak 10 to 15 percent.
See what I mean? In all cases, less reputable companies will try to capitalize on the resveratrol buzz by cutting corner and providing shoddy products at best.
This is a shame, since these poor quality supplements have turned a lot of people off of resveratrol in general. But junk supplements aside, the science backing the benefits of resveratrol is incredibly solid.
If you want to take advantage of resveratrol’s incredible health benefits but don’t want to waste your hard-earned money on an inferior, watered-down supplement, there are three key things to consider: source, form, and dosage.
When it comes to source, start with Japanese knotweed. Resveratrol can be extracted from many natural substances, such as grapes. However, the most concentrated source of resveratrol in the world is the Japanese knotweed plant.
Next, make sure the resveratrol includes a potent dose after standardization. You can be tricked by a supplement made from 500 mg of Japanese knotweed that’s only standardized to 20%. That means you’re only getting 100 mg of resveratrol. So make sure the label clearly references a standardized dose of resveratrol.
Finally, look for the trans-form. Perhaps the most important tip I can give you is to choose trans-form resveratrol, which has been shown to offer maximum bioavailability and potency. If you don’t see “trans” on the label, don’t buy it.
As for dosage, you’ll want a minimum daily dosage of 200 mg of resveratrol. There is no known toxicity associated with resveratrol, so generally, the more the better. Based on my research, I’d say that 200 mg is an ideal daily dose.
