Fish Oil Stops Dry Eyes

If you have , you know how painful this condition can be. A simple breeze across your face can sting. Cutting onions or tending a smoky grill can be unbearable. Using eye drops that “get the red out” only makes dry eyes worse. Those drops contain antihistamine, and although they may ease the sting, over time they dry your eyes out even more.

Instead of suffering, or using drugs that make matters worse, try . Several studies show that people who have dry eyes see improvement when they add 1,000-2,000 mg a day of to their diet.

The fish oil does two things: The omega-3 fatty acids it contains reduce inflammation in your eyes, which can dry out the lubricating mucous membranes in your eyelids. And it changes the composition of your tears, making them more oily, so they evaporate more slowly and keep eyes moist longer.

Other ways to help dry eyes:

  • Use a humidifier in your house.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat an anti-inflammatory diet and take antioxidant vitamins like C and E.

Some people even report that the same supplements that help their arthritis, and chondroitin, help their dry eyes.

With the fish oil, be patient. It can take 1-2 months to begin to see results.

The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: Why use drugs for dry eyes when you can achieve better results—with no side effects—with fish oil? New research even shows fish oil can even help you live longer!

For faster dry eye relief: Before bed, punch a needle hole in a fish oil cap and squeeze a small drop of oil onto your finger. Spread a little oil on each eyelid. Don't use too much or oil will get in your eye and cause foggy vision until it works out of the eye. You can swallow the capsule with breakfast so as not to waste it.

Fish Oil Supplements are so important after lasik eye surgery. I got e surgery a few months ago and during each monthly check up, my optometrist gives me fistfuls of eye drops because dry eye is a side effect of getting surgery and if not properly lubricated, can blur vision permanently. I started taking fish oil supplements to help keep my eyes moisturized and after 3 weeks, I noticed I used eye drops less and after 2 months I rarely use them. I find they tear on their own when needed the most too. I went back for my 6 month check up and he was amazed on the condition of my eyes after surgery.

My doctor tells me to avoid “gets the red out” eye drops. They contain tons of preservatives, antimicrobial agents and constricts blood capillaries.

Studies have indicated quite a range, actually. Some participants saw improvement with just 1000 mg a day while other studies used up to 2500 mg. I would say 1200-1400 mg per day is a great place to start but as the article points out, with the fish oil, be patient. It can take 1-2 months to begin to see results.
