Fish Oil Provides Non-Fish Eaters with Heart Health Benefits
Don’t eat fish? No worries! A new study shows that you can get the heart health benefits of fish from a fish oil supplement.
Researchers from the Netherlands examined over 21,000 people with low fish intakes and varied intakes of supplemental omega-3s. They found that those who supplemented their diets with the highest average amount of the omega-3s, EPA and DHA, (about 234 mg daily combined) from fish oil, experienced about a 51% reduction in their risk for fatal coronary heart disease, compared to those with the lowest average intake (40 mg per day).
Furthermore, according to the Journal of Nutrition report on the study, those with the highest intakes of DHA and EPA were 38% less likely to have a heart attack. The researchers concluded that supplementing with EPA and DHA may lower the riskof a major heart event such as a heart attack. (de Goede J., et al. Journal of Nutrition.
