Fish Oil Can Save Your Vision
Getting plenty of omega-3 fatty acids can help protect you from two of the most common causes of age-related vision loss: macular degeneration, the disruption of the center of the retina which limits your ability to read or do any fine visual task, and dry eye syndrome, which can lead to scarring of the cornea and vision loss and is just plain uncomfortable.
One study found that people who ate fish twice a week halved their risk of developing macular degeneration. (Chong, EW, et al. Arch Ophthalmol. 2008 Jun;126(6):826-33.) In the other study, frequent fish eaters reduced their risk of dry eye syndrome by up to 66%. (Miljanovic, B et al. Am J Clin Nutr. 2005 Oct;82(4):887-93.) Researchers say it’s the omega-3 oils in fish that are providing the protection.
The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: Preserving your vision is just one more of many good reasons to take fish oil every day.
