Fish Oil Boosts Glucosamine’s Effectiveness
A United Kingdom clinical trial of 177 subjects with moderate-to-severe hip or knee osteoarthritis found the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil enhance glucosamine’s joint health benefits.
Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either a glucosamine supplement (1,500 mg per day) or glucosamine plus omega-3 fatty acids (444 mg of fish oil, of which 200 mg were omega-3-fatty acids). They reported in the journal, Advances in Therapy, that the combination of fish oil an reduced morning stiffness and pain in the hips and knees by between about 49% and 56% percent, compared to 42% to 55% in the glucosamine only group.
