Feast on Fall Pears to Reap Juicy Benefits
Pears are at their best right now, especially the delicate Bartlett variety. Like some other fruits (and vegetables) pears have nutrients that help protect against vision loss. Eating pears has also been linked to better cardiovascular and colon health, and reduced risk for lung cancer.
Pears are a good source of fiber, vitamin C, copper and vitamin K. They’re in the same family as apples, and like apples, they contain phytochemicals called flavonoids that reduce your risk for heart disease.
For people with food allergies, pears are considered one of the least likely fruits to produce an allergic reaction.
If you’re lucky enough to have a local orchard, stop in to see what varieties they offer. Most pears are picked before they are fully ripe, so plan on a few days of ripening at home before your pears are perfect to eat.
