Enjoy Pomegranates Now!
The pomegranate is a true superfood that has been gaining popularity in the West recently due to its many health benefits. The juice of this ruby-red fruit contains particularly high amounts of polyphenols, those potent antioxidants also found in tea, grapes and other foods. Pomegranates contain three different types of polyphenols — tannins, anthocyanins, and ellagic acid. Laboratory and animal studies of pomegranate extract show a protective effect against cancers of the breast, colon, lung, prostate and skin, as well as against liver disease, obesity and even dental plaque. No wonder ancient lore says this fruit was favored by the gods.
Pomegranates are also relatively rich in potassium and vitamin C, and contain cholesterol-lowering phytosterols. Research suggests a diet that regularly contains pomegranate juice can help reduce blood pressure and LDL cholesterol.
Pomegranates are in season October through January, so now’s the time to eat them fresh. Not sure how to go about it? Score the rind several times with a sharp knife, then gently work the fruit apart with your fingers, coaxing out the juicy red seeds. Eat them by the handful, or add them to fruit or vegetable salads. Pomegranate juice is available year-round, but for the best health benefits, make sure you get pure juice, with no added sugar or water.
