Can This Juice Slash Breast Cancer Risk by 60 Percent?

The increasing incidence of breast cancer cases has led to an ominous statistic: women have a one in eight chance of developing the disease. A new study finds the cancer preventive effects of a certain vegetable are greater than anyone expected. The discovery shows a simple practice can have a big impact on health.

Carrots have long been known as a wonder food that can help protect against this life-threatening illness. They contain a cancer-fighting vitamin called beta-carotene. This pigment gives fruits and vegetables their bright colors. Aside from carrots, the vitamin is also plentiful in mangos, spinach, sweet potatoes and red peppers.

For some time, scientists have been recommending the consumption of carrots as part of a healthy diet. It reduces the risk of cancer and heart disease. However, the recent research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates its benefits have been underestimated.

Beta-Carotene in Carrots Reduces a Type of Breast Cancer Risk by 40 to 60 Percent

In a large study called the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition, researchers from across the continent examined how different plant chemicals affect the risk of malignancy. They chose a group of participants that consisted of 1,500 women diagnosed with breast cancer and 1,500 women who were cancer free. The methodology involved obtaining dietary information from the women, as well as testing their blood to measure levels of plant chemicals like beta-carotene, lycopene and vitamin C. Their findings showed those who ate foods plentiful in beta-carotene had a 40 to 60 percent reduced risk of developing estrogen receptor negative breast cancer. This type of malignancy is seen in one-third of breast cancer cases.

Retinoic Acid in Carrots Helps Turn Precancerous Cells into Healthy Breast Cells

The recent research builds upon a 2014 study published in the International Journal of Oncology. It found retinoic acid, a derivative of Vitamin A, can help transform precancerous breast cells into normal healthy ones. Carrots and sweet potatoes are rich in this vitamin.

Scientists analyzed the effects of retinoic acid on four types of breast cells: normal, precancerous, cancerous and aggressively cancerous. When precancerous cells were exposed to certain concentrations of the vitamin, their shape began to look more normal. In addition, all of the 443 genes that were in the process of becoming cancerous returned to a healthy state. No effect was soon in the cells that were fully cancerous.

Falcarinol in Carrots Fights Cancer

Carrots contain yet another phytochemical that fights cancer – falcarinol. A study indicates this constituent that protects carrot roots from disease and fungus may also guard people from a malignancy. That is, if they consume it regularly. Danish researchers found rats given raw carrots had a lower risk of developing colon cancer.

While I have no way of verifying the above testimonial, I see no reason to doubt its truth. Research indicates carrots contain several cancer-fighting compounds. So it is reasonable to assume consuming the juice of five pounds of carrots daily could effect a dramatic cure. For a person who has not been diagnosed with cancer, eating a raw carrot every day seems like a simple measure to incorporate into a healthy diet that can help guard against the disease.
