  • Dr. David Katz of the Yale University Prevention Research Center in 2012: “B12 is the most important nutrient you aren’t thinking about…B12 deficiency can mimic all of the effects of aging.”[7]
  • The Mayo Clinic Health Letter, September 2013: “B12 deficiency is common, with troubling symptoms…that are similar to many other problems related to growing older.”[8]
  • The Harvard Medical School’s health blog January 10th, 2013: “B12 deficiency can be sneaky, harmful and is relatively common, especially among older people.”[9]
  • The famous Dr. Mehmet Oz, recently devoted an episode of his TV show to “America’s B12 Deficiency” [10] and why this is a national crisis in the making.

Beware These 6 Red Flags: How Low B12 Can Happen to Anyone

B12 deficiency is part nature, part our own doing. For many people, it’s the result of multiple factors coming together in a “perfect storm” of trouble. Here’s why it is so easy to become dangerously low on this vital nutrient.

Red Flag #1: You’re over 50.

Experts agree that B12 absorption decreases with age. That’s why B12 is “one of the few vitamins Mayo Clinic experts routinely recommend for older adults.”[11]

You see, B12 must first link up with a protein called intrinsic factor (IF), which is produced in your stomach. IF levels drop with age…which is why your B12 levels can plummet even when your diet remains the same.

Red Flag #2: You take certain common medications.

Antacids, ulcer drugs or proton-pump inhibitors can trigger B12 deficiency because they block IF production. Likewise with aspirin and other medications that affect the stomach.

Even diabetes drugs like metformin can trigger B12 deficiency. Indeed, research has documented the link between metformin, low B12 and impaired cognitive performance.[12]

Red Flag #3 and #4: Your diet and alcohol intake

Dietary B12 only comes from meat, poultry and seafood. So vegetarians are at risk — but so are folks who have simply cut back on their meat for health reasons, which is a lot of us! Plus, if you drink alcohol regularly, your ability to absorb B12 will be reduced.

Red Flag #5 and #6: Intestinal problems and surgery

Conditions like IBS, Crohn’s, celiac disease, enteritis and food intolerances block B12 uptake at the receptor site. Plus any gastric surgery can reduce absorption, because it can eliminate stomach cells that produce intrinsic factor.

It’s a wonder we absorb any B12 when the deck is stacked against us. It takes powerful B12 support to turn the tide, so it’s important to know how to get it.

Multivitamins and “B12 Fortified” Foods Simply Won’t Do

Many people think their B12 needs are met by taking a multivitamin or eating fortified breakfast cereal. They are sadly mistaken. Taking just any old multivitamin for low B12 is like trying to fill a swimming pool with a teaspoon.

First, the B12 in multivitamins may not even work.[13] Research shows that the form of B12 found in many multivitamins may chemically interact with the other nutrients in the multivitamin and could be entirely ineffective by the time you take it… and possibly harmful.

Even if it remains stable, there’s a huge gulf between what you ingest and what you absorb. A lack of intrinsic factor could reduce your oral B12 absorption to as little as 1%.[14]

That means even a multivitamin that claims 1,000% RDA may only provide a tiny fraction of what you need. That false sense of security can have terrible consequences, and here’s an example from a colleague of mine.

His father-in-law, Bob, began struggling with memory problems, confusion, and fatigue. Bob was in his early 80s, had cut back on meat to control cholesterol, and had started taking a proton-pump inhibitor drug a few months earlier. Red flags everywhere!

My friend bought him a bottle of B12, but Bob waved it off: “I don’t need it!” he thundered, “I get over 400% RDA in my multivitamin. That’s more than enough!”

Bob knew nothing about common B12 absorption problems. He had no idea his age, medicine and low-meat diet made him a prime candidate for deficiency.

And he had no clue that B12 is entirely safe even at the relatively large daily doses needed to offset absorption problems. As The Mayo Clinic Health Letter says: “You can’t overdose on vitamin B12, as it’s not toxic.”[15]

That’s why nationally known experts like Dr. Hyla Cass, M.D. of UCLA believe that the older you get, the more likely you’ll need to take significantly more B12 to offset absorption problems. Research shows it may take at least 200 times the current low RDA in order to successfully address B12 deficiency.[16]

There may be millions of people who, like Bob, believe they’re getting ample B12 when they’re not even close. When you consider what they’re missing, it’s more than a shame: it’s a tragedy!

    My recent tests for b12 from my blood were up at 1475 and 1256. The ratio for maximum b12 was suggested at 650. I do not take any supplements of b12 Do you have any suggestions as to why my b12 is so high or is it high.

      The cause of your elevated B12 levels could be as simple as you’re eating an excessive amount of foods rich in B12. Some examples of foods containing vitamin B12 include meats, fortified cereals and food bars and fortified soy foods. However, increased vitamin
      B12 levels can also be indicative of liver disease or bone marrow disorders. Only your physician will be able to diagnose this, so it may be good idea to talk to your Physician about these lab results.

    I have very low B12.Had injections but am allergic .

    The reference range for B12 in the US and the UK is very low, such that doctors will tell patients their levels are “normal” when they are dangerously low. I can’t see this situation improving significantly till the reference range changes. Japan’s range is 500-1300, whereas US/UK only around 200-900.
