Disturbing News About What’s Really in Almond Milk

Droves of consumers have switched from cow’s milk to almond milk because they consider the nut beverage more healthful. It’s a shock to find out two leading brands contain only a few almonds and that they are thickened with carrageenan, an ingredient linked to numerous health problems.

Lawsuit Alleges Almond Milk Has Only 2 Percent Almonds

A lawsuit has been filed against two of the biggest almond milk producers in the country. The litigants allege the companies falsely advertise their products as being made primarily from almonds. In reality, Almond Breeze contains only 2 percent almonds and is mainly a mixture of water, sugar, sunflower lecithin and carrageenan.

The suit states a review of almond milk recipes on the internet reveals that most call for one part almonds to three or four parts water. Therefore, using this ratio, almonds should comprise 20 to 25 percent of the beverage’s volume. A half-gallon of almond milk should contain approximately 144 to 192 almonds, whereas the brands in questions only contain 38 to 50 percent.

This lack of almonds makes almond milk deficient in the most nutritious part – protein. One serving contains 1 gram, a quantity that compares unfavorably to the 6 grams of protein in a serving of almonds. This means, in order to get the nutritional value of a serving of almonds, you would need to drink the entire carton of almond milk.

Lawsuit Objects to Use of Carrageenan

Since the products are short on almonds, they use a red seaweed extract called carrageenan as a thickening agent. According to Joanne K. Tobacman, M.D., who has published studies evaluating the biological effects of the extract, it is linked to malignancies and stomach problems. Her research also shows carrageenan causes inflammation, a condition that is the root cause of many serious diseases.

Good News

The objective of the litigants is to force the companies to make labeling changes, thereby preventing other customers from being deceived. While the full outcome of the suit is yet to be seen, positive effects have already occurred: One brand has already removed carrageenan from their almond milks, while another has announced they will begin removing it from their products.

    Re: your article on Almond milk. Carrageenan is NOT
    present in “Original Silk Almond milk” with “60 calories” on the front label. At least the Carrageenan is NOT listed on the ingredient list as it is on other cartons.

    I was thinking of buying Almond Milk regularly for some reason, and I carefully read the label. The absence of much protein convienced me it was not worth the price. They have not misled anyone, label seems accurate, people just guess at or do not know about the other ingredients. The only good I tasted through the years was too sweet. Is it a company’s job to educate the public on dangers of some addition apparently oked by the food and drug adminerstations?
