CoQ10 Supplement May Curb Gum Disease
According to the CDC, almost 50 percent of Americans over the age of 30 have some form of gum disease. Thats one out of every two people. Who would have thought!? But can one nutrient better support your gum health?
Gum diseaseoften called gingivitis or periodontal diseaseis caused by excess dental plaque that triggers chronic inflammation in the gums. When this type of inflammation occurs, its not uncommon to experience redness, swelling, bleeding, loose teeth, pain and infection.
But the effects of gum disease arent confined to your teeth and gums.
For some time now weve known that the inflammatory substances associated with gum disease build up in the bloodstream. Once there, they set off a chain of events that contribute to heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, dementia and other chronic health conditions.
However, when gum disease is eliminated, it can significantly reduce these negative health outcomes.
Is Nutritional Deficiency at the Root of Gum Disease?
Most people believe that gum disease only affects people who dont take care of their teeth. Unfortunately, this isnt always the case. Many individuals who are meticulous about their dental care also fall prey to gingivitis and other dental concerns.
There may be a plausible explanation for this: It could be as simple as a deficiency of coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10.
Scientific research shows that certain cells in the body have high requirements for this enzyme. These cells are considered to be metabolically active. And they include the cells found in the soft tissue of your gums. Without enough CoQ10 they just dont have the fuel they need to thrive.
In fact, biopsies from patients with inflamed gum tissue consistently show a deficiency of CoQ10. (This same deficiency doesnt show up in people with healthy gums.) But when researchers tested the effects of CoQ10 in patients with gum disease, the results were phenomenal.

CoQ10 to the Rescue
In one study, patients treated with 50 mg of CoQ10 daily showed significant improvement after only 21 days of treatment when compared to those taking a placebo. Those taking CoQ10 had less swelling, bleeding and redness. Additionally, the depth of gingival pockets decreased and they had less looseness of the teeth.
In another analysis, 50 patients with periodontitis underwent scaling and root planing. All patients went home with similar toothbrushes, toothpaste and brushing instructions. However, half the patients were also given a CoQ10 supplement.
After four months, the CoQ10 group had much greater improvements in inflammation levels, tooth stability, plaque index, pocket depth and microbial levels.
The authors note that CoQ10 may provide the necessary energy production to heal and repair periodontal tissue. Plus the antioxidant activity produced by CoQ10 appears to counter free radicals that are active during periods of inflammation.
Since CoQ10 levels start declining somewhere between the ages of 30 and 40, it makes good sense to supplement with at least 100 200 mg daily. This amount will not only help improve gum health, it will also provide cellular energy for your entire body including your heart.
