CoQ10 Boosts Sperm Count and Function
Your heart isn’t the only thing that can benefit from supplementation with CoQ10. If you’re a man, your sex life may too. New research findings indicate that CoQ10 boost sperm count and function. According to a new study published in the July 2009 issue of the Journal of Urology, taking 300 mg of CoQ10 daily may improve the motility and density of sperm in infertile men. This news may come as a surprise to the many men who take CoQ10 for its heart health benefits, who were probably unaware of this side effect.
Here’s the lowdown: Researchers recruited 212 infertile men and randomly assigned them to receive 300 mgof CoQ10 daily or a similar placebo regimen during a 26-week period, followed by a 30-week treatment-free phase. They found significant improvement in sperm density and motility and the men who were subjected to the CoQ10 therapy. (Journal of Urology. 2009;182(1):237-48.)
The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: While further studies are needed to determine the effect of CoQ10 supplementation on pregnancy rates, consider taking supplemental CoQ10 if you are looking to increase your fertility. It will help two of your most important organs — your heart and your friend down-there.
