Cinnamon Helps Balance Blood Sugar
According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, cinnamon may help you control your blood sugar levels. Researchers found that people who consumed three grams of cinnamon daily had improved insulin function and increased levels of a peptide reported to delay the emptying of the stomach. Delayed stomach emptying may help people eat less, preventing overeating which can lead to spikes in blood sugar.
This study adds to a growing body of research reporting that active compounds in cinnamon may improve parameters associated with diabetes. However, long-term clinical trials are needed to evaluate cinnamon’s effect on Type 2 diabetics. (Hlebowicz J et al. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. 2009, 89: 815–821.)
The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: If you are concerned about your blood sugar, consider adding a standardized, water-soluble cinnamon extract to your supplements regimen.
Whole or powdered cinnamon contains coumarin, a compound that can cause liver damage in large amounts, so it is best to use a cinnamon extract supplement which has this constituent removed, such as the patented Cinnulin PF™, for therapeutic benefits.
