Can Calorie Restriction Make a Healthy Person Even Healthier?
Dating all the way back to the 1930s, calorie restriction (CR) isn’t a new phenomenon. In fact, we’ve written about it several times on Live in the Now highlighting how the practice activates anti-aging genes and has been shown to increase life expectancy. Advocates of the CR lifestyle swear by it, with some even going so far as to say that it can increase human lifespan to 130 years!
The researchers behind the CALERIE (Comprehensive Assessment of Long-Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy) Study were intrigued, but skeptical of this particular claim, as they were unable to find a practitioner of calorie restriction who had lived to see 130. So to investigate the effects of CR and find out what happens when a healthy person switches to a CR diet (a diet that’s higher in nutrition and 20-30% lower in calories), they enrolled healthy people — those not needing to lose weight or address other health issues — in the CALERIE Study. The multi-center study began in 2007 with results expected late next year. I recently came across this motivating story from one of the study’s participants that highlights her positive experience adapting to a reduced calorie lifestyle.
Has anyone tried calorie restriction or is it a lifestyle you’d consider trying out?
