Can Baking Soda Help Improve Cancer Treatment?
Research hasn’t shown that baking soda can prevent cancer, but a new study found it may make immunotherapy treatment more effective in fighting hard-to-treat cancers. Moreover, a recent investigation indicated a daily dose of baking soda may decrease the harmful inflammation associated with autoimmune disease.
Taking too much baking soda, known as sodium bicarbonate, causes toxicity that can result in serious disorders; but taking small amounts may be helpful for certain conditions. Many of us remember our mothers giving us soda water for an upset stomach. The alkalinity reduced the excess acid that sometimes leads to indigestion. Research is now discovering more medical uses for this alkalinity.
Baking Soda Makes Cancerous Tumor Cells More Sensitive to Immunotherapy
In a study at Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, scientists focused on breast and prostate cancer tumors in mice. They observed when mice consumed baking soda, the cancerous cells were more susceptible to immunotherapy. Their findings suggested baking soda’s ability to neutralize acid is the factor underlying the benefit.
Tumors have large numbers of cells that are deprived of oxygen, which increases acidity and causes the cells to become inactive and dormant. When the cells are in this state, they typically can’t be killed by cancer drugs. If some of these inactive cells are cancerous and are unreached by treatment, they may become active after the tumor is removed, thereby causing the development of cancer again. The researchers saw that the baking soda reversed the acidity, thus enabling the cells to become active and increasing their vulnerability to immunotherapy.
“The prediction would be that by reawakening these cells, you could make the tumor far more sensitive to therapy,” said lead author Chi Van Dang. “The concept is so easy. It’s not some $100,000 per year drug. It’s literally just baking soda.”
The study was published in the journal Cell.
Daily Dose of Baking Soda Reduced Inflammation of Autoimmune Diseases
Scientists at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta University found that a daily dose of baking soda can help the spleen to produce an anti-inflammatory environment, an effect beneficial for people with autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. They noted when healthy people or rats drank soda water, it impacted the mesothelial cells on the spleen, an organ that is part of the immune system. The mesothelial cells signaled to the spleen that it wasn’t necessary to launch the immune response of inflammation.
“It’s most likely a hamburger not a bacterial infection,” is basically the message, said corresponding author Dr. Paul O’Connor, renal physiologist in the MCG Department of Physiology at Augusta University.
Mesothelial cells line the body cavities, and one of their functions is to warn the organs they cover of the presence of an invader, such as a pathogen, which triggers the immune response. After drinking water with baking soda for two weeks, the effect on the mesothelial cells caused the population of immune cells to shift from those that promote inflammation to those that reduce it.
Baking soda also increased T cells, which tamper down the immune response. This anti-inflammatory effect lingered four days in humans and three days in rats.
The study was published in the Journal of Immunology.
Precautions of Drinking Baking Soda Water
Everyone is familiar with the saying, “If a little is good, then more is better.” Although this holds true for some things, it doesn’t apply to baking soda. If fact, taking more than the recommended amount can be dangerous, disrupting the activity of the heart, brain and muscles. The effects may include seizures, chest pain and other serious problems that necessitate a trip to the emergency room. If you’re interested in trying baking soda for any reason, check with your doctor first and don’t exceed his or her dosage recommendation.
Because drinking baking soda water is not without health risks, a safer alternative could be consuming an alkaline diet, which centers around fruits and vegetables and limits meat. According to noted wellness physician Dr. Josh Axe, an alkaline diet is linked to several health benefits, including fighting cancer and reducing inflammation.
