Best Pain Relief for Osteoarthritis
Here’s good news for people who are taking glucosamine and chondroitin to fight the pain of osteoarthritis.
A five-year National Institutes of Health study finds that glucosamine and chondroitin together alleviate moderate to severe osteoarthritis knee pain better than either natural substance alone or even the pharmaceutical drug Celebrex.
This refutes speculation that glucosamine fights joint pain just as well alone as when combined with chondroitin.
Specifically, the new study finds that glucosamine and chondroitin combined was about 20% more effective in relieving pain than glucosamine alone, about 30% more effective than chondroitin alone, 14% more effective than Celebrex and nearly 50% more effective than a placebo.
The effective dose in the landmark double-blind controlled study was 1500 milligrams of glucosamine hydrochloride and 1200 milligrams of chondroitin sulfate a day.
The study, known as the Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT) included 1258 osteoarthritis patients at a dozen healthcare facilities around the country.
Previous research finds that glucosamine and MSM also work better combined than either alone.
