Apple Health Benefits: Tis the Season for Apples!
I love seeing all the different varieties of apples available in autumn and try to learn about unfamiliar ones every year. I prefer locally grown varieties, which for me include New York State Empire apples, which are perfect for cooking.
Apple heath benefits are numerous and can protect against a wide array of diseases. Apples really do earn their reputation. Here are some of the things they can do:
• Protect bones from osteoporosis
• Reduce your risk for asthma
• Stop Alzheimer’s disease
• Lower cholesterol
• Prevent lung, breast, colon and liver cancer
• Help in the management of diabetes
• Aid weight loss
Apples contain lots of protective components, including quercetin, a powerful antioxidant found mostly in the fruit’s skin, and pectin, a cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber.
This is the best time of year to take advantage of apple health benefits, as apples are at their freshest!
