A Must-Read For Anyone Who Uses a Smartphone



No one wants to be told that their beloved cell phone or cordless phone, both of which are enormous conveniences, may increase their risk of brain cancer. However, alarming findings from a new Swedish study showing a correlation between the use of these devices and brain tumors seems too strong to discount.

The Incriminating Evidence

In a case-controlled study published in the International Journal of Oncology, researchers explored the long-term effects of using wireless phones, including cell phones and cordless phones, on brain tumor risk. Participants who used wireless phones for more than one year had a 70 percent higher risk of developing brain cancer than those who had only used wireless phones for a year or less. Even more frightening, participants who used wireless phones for more than 25 years had a 300 percent higher risk of brain cancer than those who had used the devices for a year or less.

Just as the number of years of use showed a definite correlation with brain cancer, so also did the total number of hours of use. The heaviest users who spent approximately 40 minutes each day using these phones over a span of 10 years had a 250 percent higher risk of brain tumors than those who rarely or never used them.

The above findings are very incriminating, but an additional discovery implicates wireless devices even further. In both cell phone and cordless phone users, brain cancer risk was highest in the part of the brain that had the most exposure to wireless phone radiation. This point of greatest exposure was generally in the temporal lobe region, and it was on the side of the head where the participants used their phones most often.

By no means is this the first time research has raised doubt about the safety of wireless phone use. An earlier 13-nation interphone study found that people who used cell phones for at least 1,640 hours over a course of their lifetime had a 180 percent greater risk of brain cancer.

many health experts seem to think we might be, contending that government agencies are discounting the danger signs of cell phones just as they did in regard to tobacco use before the evidence of its health effects became overwhelming. Experts points out that as in smoking, it can take years for the tragic consequences of a health hazard to manifest. Since 10 to 30 years of cell phone exposure are required for brain tumors to develop, we are just beginning to see the effects of long-term heavy use.

Some of the potential health affects include DNA damage, cancer and memory loss as well as Alzheimer’s disease, reduced sperm count and impaired brain defenses.

Take These Steps to Protect Yourself

  • Keep your cell phone off when not in use.
