8 Sheet Masks Worth Trying
Whether you’ve yet to try one or have already made them a part of your healthy skin regimen on a weekly basis, sheet masks are quickly becoming the #1 way to boost radiance, repair skin and decompress from life.
The facial masks, often made of 100% cotton or natural fibers, come pre-soaked in a blend of nutrient-dense serums that contain anything from vitamins to antioxidants to kelp to snail (yes snail) secretions. But choosing which is best for you can get tricky, as the market is saturated with masks for men and women alike that offer a verity of skin rejuvenating perks — which is why I tested several of the highest rated masks so that I could share which stand up to their claims.
As you age, your skin loses the ability to produce the nutrients that protect it from the damaging effects of things like the sun’s UV rays, pollution and free radicals.
Many beauty products contain harsh chemicals that can actually make your skin age faster! But there’s a natural skin care solution that’s been proven to make skin look younger by providing it with the #1 nutrient it craves.
And the best part about these masks is that since the serum-soaked sheet has to stay on the skin for a period of time, these masks force you to experience 20-45 minutes of quiet time as you as you sit back, relax and allow it to do its magic.
1. innesfree Manuka Honey Mask
Unknown to many, honey is an incredibly effective ingredient for healthy skin, as its humectant properties help draw moisture into skin cells to soften and improve elasticity. And because honey is also a mild antiseptic, it offers skin a double dose of protection to keep skin clean and moisturized.
This mask is soaked in an antioxidant-rich serum that absorbs into the skin quickly and easily to provide an all-day defense against skin-damaging free radicals. Unique ingredients like cucumber and green tea stimulate blood flow and “de-puff,” while ingredients such as honey and aloe help rejuvenate and hydrate tired skin. After just one use, I noticed a fresh, rested and restored-looking glow.
innesfree Manuka Honey Mask, $13.50 for a box of 10 sheet masks.
2. Skederm Snail Jelly Mask
Perhaps you’ve heard it said that women in Japan beautify their skin by allowing snails to explore their faces as they kick back and relax. How they relax as this is happening is beyond me, but believe it or not, this beauty wives tale rings true. Here’s why:
When snails feel safe and stress-free, they secret a unique “drool.” This drool contains allantoin as well as glycolic acid, two ingredients that help sloth off dead skin cells and restore the top layers of skin by quelling inflammation and smoothing skin tone. Note: No snails are harmed in the production of this ingredient. The drool secreted, which is later processed into Snail Secretion Filtrate (SSF), an ingredient that has been used for centuries, is only produced when the snail feels safe. When snails feel threatened, on the other hand, they secret a foamy matter that does not contain the active ingredients.
While there was a small mental hurdle involved — after all, you are putting snail drool on your face — this mask left my skin feeling smooth, moisturized and renewed. I’d definitely try it again. Note: Since this removes dead skin cells, it creates a perfect environment to maximize the absorption of nutrients you apply after use. For this reason, it’s best to use this mask at night, then follow with your favorite nutrient-rich night serum. (I use — and am completely addicted to — Stop Aging Now’s NightFX Renewal Serum.)
Skederm Snail Jelly Mask, $19.90 for a box of 10 sheet masks.
3. Whamisa Organic Facial Mask Pack Green Essence
This was probably the most unique mask I’ve ever used — it truly looks like you’re wrapping your face in sea kelp and the results feel as though you spent an hour at the spa. It’s made with 100% real sea kelp and is moistened using organic essence instead of water. It also includes vitamin B3 to help improve skin tone. One warning: It doesn’t boast the most pleasant scent in the world, but it’s absolutely worth trying at least once.
Whamisa Organic Facial Mask Pack Green Essence, $9.97 for 1 sheet mask.
4. Grace and Stella Collagen Facial Masks
The plump, crease-free skin we enjoyed in our youth was thanks to rich collagen stores reinforcing the integrity of our skin’s cellular matrix. But as we age, everything from time to diet to environmental factors break down this precious protective protein, resulting in the fine creases that begin to appear in our 30s and 40s. Luckily, reintroducing collagen back into our skin is easier than you think thanks to collagen sheet masks — but in a market saturated with options, this can be one of the more confusing sheet masks to select. I tried roughly eight collagen sheet masks and this was by far my favorite.
It not only contains a double whammy of collagen and features the amino acid arginine — an amino acid that penetrates pores, helps repair tissue damage and aid in protein synthesis — it also offers up jojoba oil, a remarkable oil for skin. This mask will leave your skin feeling more hydrated and significantly more plump.
Grace and Stella Collagen Facial Masks, $12.95 for 6 sheet masks.
5. SK-II Facial Treatment Mask
When I first looked into the SK-II Facial Treatment Mask — a winner of InStyle’s 2017 Best Beauty Buys — I was a bit taken aback by the price. But then dove into the reviews on various websites and was met with endless feeds of enthusiastic buyers raving about the efficacy of the product, most adding that it’s truly worth every penny. Obviously I needed to experience what all the buzz was about, so I finally gave in and tried it — and I don’t regret it one bit. It is, in fact, worth every penny. I purchased just one mask at the $17 price then decided to keep a 6-pack on hand for special occasions or when my skin felt drier than usual.
What makes this one so special? The brand evolved when scientists at a sake brewery in Japan noticed that the elderly workers’ hands had very little signs of aging, despite their faces and necks showing the normal signs of age progression. As it turned out, they discovered that naturally derived liquids from the sake fermentation process contained nutrients that repaired, reinforced and rehydrated skin. Much to our benefit, they learned how to transfer this knowledge into a product that could be used by the general public and the rest, as they say, is history. Cheers!
SK-II Facial Treatment Mask, $17 for 1 sheet mask or $95 for 6 sheet masks.
6. ORGAID Anti-Aging & Moisturizing Organic Sheet Mask
Made with certified organic ingredients, this aloe-rich mask combines vitamin B3, witch hazel and hyaluronic acid to help curb the aging of skin cells, reduce redness and swelling, and promote hydration, all in one easy step.
What’s unique about this sheet mask is that it uses a patented fabric that aids in better skin absorption. While they don’t dish many secrets about the technology used to create this non-woven fabric, the strong but breathable secret may be responsible for this mask’s long-lasting results, one of the primary reasons I fell in love with it. I tried the mask on a Monday, and by Wednesday my skin still felt a touch more plump and hydrated, often a rarity when it comes to 100% organic skincare products.
ORGAID Anti-aging & Moisturizing Organic Sheet Mask, $42 for a box of 6 sheet masks.
7. Dr. Jart Pore Minimalist Mask with Black Charcoal
Featuring activated Korean charcoal, this skin-soothing black sheet mask detoxifies and tightens to improve elasticity and balance skin tone. Even if “clogged pores” are no longer a concern, the tightening effect of this mask will certainly wow anyone looking for a skin reboot.
Once note of caution: the ingredients penetrate and also remove excess sebum. So if you have naturally dry skin, wait to try this one at night when you can immediately rehydrate delicate skin. Generally speaking, I wouldn’t plan on using this weekly, but it’s a great option, as the charcoal and arginine combine to make it a unique experience that is perfect for those looking for a quick fix that tightens and tones.
Jart Pore Minimalist, $34 for a box of 5 sheet masks.
8. BioRepublic No More Years
It could be said I saved the best for last, though it’s a tough call between SK-II and this BioRepublic Sheet mask.
This ultra-hydrating sheet mask had me at apple stem cells, but secured my loyalty when I read that it also contains antioxidants, collagen and hyaluronic acid, making up what I consider the healthy skin trifecta.
Each mask delivers a healthy dose of Swiss Apple Stem Cells, a fruit culture shown to help boost the renewal process of epidermal stem cells, so that skin cells can repair and rejuvenate, as well as collagen, peptides and two different varieties of hyaluronic acid. Together, these ingredients work to reduce the appearance of fine lines and lock in hydration for supple and fresh-looking skin.
BioRepublic No More Years, $72 for a box of 8 sheet masks
