6 Ways to Eliminate Under-Eye Bags and Dark Circles
Is allergy season, stress or a lack of a good night’s rest taking a toll on your eyes? Thankfully, there are some natural remedies to erase those pesky under-eye bags and dark circles. Here are 6 effective ways to get your face looking fresh and alive again.
1. Baking Soda
Unknown to many, baking soda, a refrigerator staple, can actually be added to your skincare routine to clear those bothersome under-eye bags. Sodium bicarbonate, or the compound that makes up baking soda, can be just as effective at removing under-eye bags as those expensive creams sold at the makeup counter. Simply add a teaspoon of baking soda to a cup of hot water. Stir until it melts completely. Soak 2 cotton pads in the solution and place them directly on the under-eye skin. Let them sit for 15 minutes. When finished, wash your face and moisturize. For best results, repeat daily for 2 weeks.
2. Coffee Grounds
Your favorite morning beverage can be added to your daily beauty routine as well to reduce under-eye puffiness. The caffeine in coffee grounds alleviates puffiness and the antioxidants ward off skin-aging free radicals. To create the skin-tightening eye mask, mix together 2 teaspoons of unused coffee grounds with 1 egg white for 1 minute. Apply the mixture under your eyes and let sit for 10 minutes. You’ll actually feel your skin tightening and a boost of energy as the caffeine absorbs into your skin. Wipe off with a wet towel and apply facial moisturizer. A hidden property of strawberries is their ability to make skin appear smooth and radiant. For the simple remedy, chill a handful of strawberries in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Cut off the tops and slice them in half. Find a relaxing place to lie down and put the slices right below your eyes for 15 to 20 minutes. This will allow the alpha hydroxy acid found in the fruit to help clear up your under-eye bags and create a soothing sensation.
4. Tea Bags
For your new go-to under-eye de-puffer, soak 2 tea bags in cold water or let sit in the refrigerator for 10 minutes. Find a place to relax and let the tea bags rest on your eyes for about 20 minutes. The cooling sensation of the tea bags will calm the skin around your eyes, while the caffeine will reduce puffiness.
5. Sleep on Your Back
This sleeping position is the healthiest for many reasons. Sleeping on your back will prevent fluids from building up under your eyes. Puffy eyes commonly result from sleeping on your side or stomach. Adding another pillow underneath your head at night will also help your eyes appear more lively the next day.
6. Put Down the Salt Shaker
Eating foods high in sodium will induce puffiness around your eyes. Excess water gathers in the body in areas that have the highest sodium content. This “water weight” tends to build up in the area around your eyes which causes those troublesome bags you can’t seem to get rid of. The solution? Easing off the salty snacks will definitely help.
