Quiz: Are You Suffering From Adrenal Fatigue?

by

If you’re feeling tired all the time and you answered “yes” to three or more of the symptoms listed below, then it’s time to take action.

The hectic pace of life in 21st century America is driving a silent epidemic of exhaustion that conventional medicine has no answers for. As a physician who specializes in helping people who’ve gotten nowhere with the mainstream medical system, chronic fatigue is the #1 complaint I hear.

Over the years, I’ve seen more and more patients complaining about feeling run down, overwhelmed, depressed, irritable, achy and older than their years. They feel like they’re running on empty — even when they manage to get enough sleep — and often rely on caffeine or high-carb foods to make it through the day.

If this sounds familiar, please keep reading, because chances are you’re suffering from what I believe is the most overlooked health problem facing Americans today. Incredibly, most doctors aren’t trained to recognize it, and mainstream medicine refuses to acknowledge that it exists![1]

Yet in almost every case, I’m able to restore my patients’ energy and vitality within weeks with a simple and effective solution for this increasingly common condition. I’ll tell you more about this solution in a moment, but first, let me introduce myself.

I’m Dr. Kevin Passero, Medical Editor for the Live in the Now natural health newsletter. As a naturopathic physician, I take an integrative approach to treating patients. At my clinics, I work one-on-one with people to uncover the underlying causes of their health problems and to help them unlock their healing potential with natural solutions.

The Real Reason You’re Sick and Tired

So what is it that makes otherwise healthy people feel sick and tired? It’s not lack of sleep, poor nutrition or even anything to do with the aging process. It’s not your heart, your thyroid or your blood sugar.

It’s likely something you haven’t given a moment’s thought — your adrenal glands.

Your adrenals are two extremely important walnut-sized glands that manufacture more than 50 different hormones that play a role in energy, stamina, mood balance, mental clarity, immune function and sex drive.[2] In essence, your adrenals maintain your vitality, or “life force.”

The adrenals are also responsible for the survival mechanism known as the fight-or-flight response. When your brain perceives danger, your adrenals pump out stress hormones, which increase blood, sugar and oxygen to your brain and muscles, so you can think and act quickly. Meanwhile, these hormones suppress functions like digestion and immunity that aren’t needed to handle the situation at hand.

This process is natural and quite helpful — assuming that the stressful situation is short-lived, like maybe getting into a fender bender. The problem is that the body can also overreact to stressors that are not life-threatening, like work pressure, financial or family difficulties — even simple things like traffic jams and long check-out lines.

In today’s world, we’re faced with stress constantly, and over time, repeated activation of the flight-or-flight response takes a toll on the adrenal glands, often wearing them out to the point that they no longer function optimally. When you factor in things like environmental toxins, processed foods, allergies, infections and insomnia, and it’s no wonder that adrenal fatigue is becoming increasingly common.[3]

Your Health Depends on Optimally Functioning Adrenal Glands

The more stress you experience, the harder your adrenals must work to protect you. So how do your adrenals react to all this stress day after day, year after year? Eventually they run out of juice and before you know it, you’re running on empty.

Chronically elevated stress hormones can make you susceptible to a wide range of health problems, including heart issues, thyroid dysfunction, low libido, infertility, weight gain and impaired immunity.[4-6] Yet unfortunately, too many doctors refuse to recognize that adrenal fatigue is a real issue — until it manifests as a serious health problem.

The fact is, conventional medicine doesn’t offer any real solutions to being burned out and tired. Your doctor may suggest a Band-Aid fix like antianxiety drugs or antidepressants if your mood is starting to suffer, or stimulant medications if the fatigue is making it difficult to concentrate. But none of these pharmaceutical interventions address the issue of depleted adrenal glands — and I think you deserve a better solution.

My Simple Approach to Overcoming Fatigue and Restoring Your Energy

Here’s the good news: adrenal fatigue does not have to be permanent. As a holistic physician, I’ve spent years studying nature’s pharmacopeia to develop a safe and effective approach to helping my patients with adrenal fatigue get their vitality back.

Of course, doing your best to get adequate sleep each night is important, as is minimizing your intake of caffeine, sugar and processed foods, exercising and managing stress. But this may not be enough if your body is not properly fueled with certain vital nutrients.

What I Recommend to All My Patients Suffering From Adrenal Fatigue

The Most Important Stress-Fighting Vitamins

Certain members of the B vitamin family support the body’s response to stress and naturally assist the adrenals in increasing energy and stamina. Vitamins B12, B6 and B5 (pantothenic acid) in particular play critical roles in energy production and have all been shown to enhance adrenal function during times of stress.[7-9]

In addition, B1, B2, B3 (niacin) and B7 (biotin) also have important synergistic functions, so I always put my patients with adrenal fatigue on these nutrients. I also recommend vitamin C and calcium, which are helpful when someone has been dealing with prolonged stress.

Adaptogens: Herbs That Help You Cope with Stress

Over the past 50 years, medical research has been investigating a group of plants known to improve energy levels by modulating the body’s response to stress. They belong to a family known as the adaptogens, and they have been shown to be incredibly safe and effective.

Here are the top 3 adaptogens for boosting energy and supporting the adrenal glands, based on my experience with patients at my clinic:

1. Ashwaganda
Numerous studies have shown that extracts of the ashwaganda plant can reduce feelings of stress.[10-12] In a recent gold-standard study, highly stressed patients receiving ashwaganda extract had significantly lower stress assessment scores vs. their placebo controlled counterparts. Additional findings have shown significantly lower levels of stress hormones in patients given ashwaganda extract.

2. Eleuthero
Eleuthero, or Siberian ginseng, has been shown in research to reduce symptoms of fatigue and improve exercise tolerance.[13,14] Studies also show healthy aging benefits due to its abilities to reduce damage to DNA.[14] It supports the body by balancing stress hormone production and helping the adrenals cope with stress.

3. Rhodiola
Rhodiola is another herb that has been shown by numerous studies to enhance the body’s response to physical and emotional stress.[15-17] This herb is truly unique because its phytonutrients can increase your physical and mental energy WITHOUT the side effects associated with caffeine and other stimulants. Rhodiola also protects the body from the ill effects of stress, while temporary solutions like caffeine just wear your body down further.

My All-in-One Solution for Ending Fatigue

I put almost all of my patients on specific doses of B vitamins and adaptogenic herbs, and I’m proud to say that the vast majority with adrenal fatigue have dramatic improvements within just a few weeks, sometimes even days! However, my patients were complaining about the cost and number of pills they had to take to follow the precise regimen I prescribed.

That’s why I decided to develop a superior “all-in-one” formula that I call PurVitality®. It includes 12 key nutritional factors, including high doses of the B vitamins and my top 3 adaptogenic herbs in a unique, synergistic blend designed to boost energy and adrenal health safely and naturally.

Standardized Eleuthero (250 mg) and Rhodiola (150 mg): I added potent doses of these excellent adaptogenic herbs for extra energy-boosting and stress-fighting power. These herbs are shown by science to boost mood, energy, stamina, fertility and sexual performance while decreasing the negative effects of physical and mental stress.

Vitamin C and Calcium: Vitamin C is included to boost your energy and elevate your mood. Unlike many supplements, PurVitality contains GMO-free vitamin C. Calcium is included in an optimal form and dose for healthy cellular energy production and adrenal function.

Fast Acting, Long Lasting and You’ll Still Sleep Great: Just take 2 tablets in the morning or anytime you feel sluggish, and you’ll get a rapid boost of energy that lasts all day long. And best of all, it’s non-habit forming, won’t make you jittery and won’t disrupt your sleep.
